They were all maximum thermometers with blackened bulbs in vacuo, and had been verified at Calcutta by comparison with the arbitrary standard in the manner previously noticed. The solar thermometer has been exposed on a stand, 4 feet high, of the regu lation pattern, since the beginning of 1878.

The thermometers for grass radiation have been changed thrice. They are all of similar pattern, via, spirit thermometers, graduated on the stem and without an attached scale. The instruments in use, since November 1876, are the following.
